During my travels in Canada, particularly in the enchanting region north of Lake Ontario, I stumbled upon the fascinating life of Bartholomew Toyner, which inspired the following narrative. After consulting with the schoolmaster in his town, I received an account filled with vivid detail and heartfelt insight that reflects the writers deep affection for Toyner. What follows is a condensed version of that account, which I believe is worthy of sharing with the world. While I dont think novels should serve as theological treatises, I do believe that they can explore religious sentiments and opinions, ultimately fostering understanding between minds that often misinterpret each other. (From the Preface) One of the most remarkable novels of the year. -- New York Commercial Advertiser. Powerful in conception, treatment, and influence. -- Boston Globe.
