Il digitale ci ha permesso di sopravvivere nei mesi di pandemia, ma il costo per l'ambiente è stato tutt'altro che trascurabile, così come incredibilmente pesante è il costo delle nostre attività quotidiane su internet. Un interessantissimo articolo di Regine Debatty dalla sua newsletter "We make money not art". Consigliatissima la lettura perché si parla di cose su cui il grande pubblico comincerà a riflettere solo tra diversi anni.

Nell'ultima newsletter di Regine Debatty "We make money not art", facciamo soldi non arte, si parla di tutto l'inquinamento che è stato provocato dall'essere rimasti a casa a causa della pandemia. Perché è vero che la tecnologia del digitale ci ha permesso di sopravvivere dal punto di vista mentale e anche professionale durante tutti questi mesi della pandemia, abbiamo usato il digitale per guardare i film, per fare i nostri video, le videoconferenze, per moltissime altre attività per ordinare il cibo, per fare attività fisica, ed è anche vero che nel corso del 2020 abbiamo anche smesso di usare l'aereo, quindi si dovrebbe dire abbiamo usato meno energia. Il problema è che anche se durante il periodo della pandemia siamo rimasti a casa, l'economia a cui abbiamo dato vita è assolutamente ad altissima emissione di carbonio. Nella newsletter "We make money not art" c'è un bellissimo articolo molto lungo, vi metto il link perché vale proprio la pena leggere perché ci sono tantissimi spunti, io ve ne dico solo qualcuno in questi miei tre minuti. Si fa riferimento al The Shift Project che è un'organizzazione francese che nel 2019 già chiedeva che si cercasse di creare un'economia a basse emissioni di carbonio. Questa organizzazione ha fatto delle stime che il settore digitale è responsabile, era responsabile per il 4% delle emissioni di gas nocivi per l'ambiente, e il 45% è quello che è equiparabile al totale di emissioni emesse dal settore degli aerei, quindi noi quando pensiamo agli spostamenti aerei pensiamo che siano quelli quelli che inquinano di più, invece il digitale inquina eccome. Ci sono tantissimi spunti, come tutta l'energia che serve, l'elettricità che serve per alimentare i nostri computer, i nostri strumenti digitali, e l'energia che serve per creare i server per fare le ricerche su Google, per fare gli acquisti su Amazon. Ripeto: è una lettura incredibilmente piena di spunti, interessante, e anche che fa paura perché non abbiamo ancora trovato un modo per cambiare il modello economico.
