Il mio mantra prima degli esami era sempre: quello che non ho imparato finora non lo imparo certo in 10 minuti prima che mi chiamino all'appello.

Gli esami sono una cosa un po' strana, perché quando ci si prepara per un esame il risultato finale dimostra solo che siamo stati bravi a prepararci all'esame, ma non dice necessariamente che siamo bravi a fare quella cosa per cui ci stiamo preparando. Faccio un esempio pratico: se si supera brillantemente un esame di filosofia o di psicologia non significa che si è in grado poi di applicare le cose che si sono imparate alla vita reale, magari sul posto di lavoro, significa solo che si è studiato in modo da rispondere correttamente alle domande fatte dall'esaminatore.

Quando andavo all'università mi ricordo che molte delle persone con cui aspettavo che mi chiamassero all'appello dell'esame erano lì ancora che ripassavano, si stressava. Io avevo sempre un atteggiamento abbastanza rilassato no, perché si è sempre comunque nervosi prima dell'esame, però io mi ripetevo questo mantra: quello che non ho imparato fino adesso non lo imparo certamente in questi 10 minuti prima che mi chiamino.

Diciamo che, per quanto mi riguarda, la cosa ha funzionato brillantemente. Vabbè, devo anche dire che ero una secchiona, che studiavo molto, ma non perché fossi secchiona, ma perché ho avuto la fortuna di studiare materie che mi piacevano, eh, c'è poco da fare, quando si studia una cosa che piace, è chiaro che c'è sempre, anche un po' la fatica dello studio, e rinunciare a fare altre cose, rinunciare a uscire, stare sui libri, però c'è anche la gioia e l'amore e la passione per la cosa che si sta studiando.

Per questo è così importante che i genitori lascino in pace i figli e le figlie e gli lascino scegliere le materie che loro desiderano studiare, perché la vita è già difficile così com'è per i nostri ragazzi e le nostre ragazze. Il mondo del lavoro, ma chi lo sa come sarà? I ragazzi e le ragazze faranno lavori che ancora nemmeno esistono, lo dico sempre, quindi perché costringerli a trascorrere tre anni di università a studiare materie che non piacciono? Che almeno scelgano materie che piacciono a loro così possono metrici tutta la passione che poi mette in luce anche doti nascoste, e si studia meglio, si studia con più attenzione e si prendono anche voti più alti agli esami, anche se poi, lo sappiamo, sia il voto dell'esame che la stessa laurea sono più o meno dei pezzi di carta, che però sono fondamentali perché se non si hanno si rimane ancora più indietro rispetto a quanto non si rimanga.
Voglio finire con una nota positiva: gli esami possono essere anche un momento importante di crescita e sono anche importanti per capire quello che non ci piace e smettere di farlo.

Exams are a bit of a strange thing, because when preparing for an exam the final result only shows that we were good at preparing for the exam, but not necessarily says we are good at that thing we are preparing for.

I give a practical example: if you brilliantly pass an exam in philosophy or psychology does not mean that you are then able to apply the things you have learned to real life, perhaps in the workplace, it just means that you have studied so as to answer correctly the questions asked by the examiner.

When I was at uni, I remember that many of the people with whom I was waiting to be called to do the [always oral] exam they were still there reviewing, stressing. I always had an attitude, actually not relaxed, because you are always anyway nervous before the exam, however, I used to repeat this mantra to myself: if I haven't learned something so far, I will certainly not learn it in these 10 minutes before they call me to do the [oral] exam.

Let's say that, as far as I'm concerned, it worked out brilliantly. Well, I also have to say that I was a nerd, that I studied a lot, but I didn't because I was geeky, but because I was lucky enough to study subjects that I liked, eh, there is little to do, when you study something that you like, of course that there is still a little bit of study fatigue, giving up doing other things, giving up going out, being in books, however, there is also the joy and love and passion for the thing that is being studied.

This is why it is so important for parents to leave their sons and daughters alone, let them choose the subjects they wish to study, because life is already difficult as it is for our boys and girls. The world of work, but who knows what it will be like? Boys and girls will do jobs that don't even exist yet, I always say so, so why force them to spend three years of uni studying subjects that they
don't like? Let them at least choose subjects they like so they can put all passion that then also brings out hidden talents, and you study better, you study with more attention and you also get higher grades on exams, although then, we know, both the exam grade and the degree itself are more or less pieces of paper, which however are crucial because if you don't have them you fall even further behind what you would otherwise be. I want to end on a positive note: exams can also be a important time of growth and are also important to understand what we don't like
and stop doing that.
