James Petersen in his book “Why Don’t We Listen Better”, says his first rule of crisis is: “Listen First – Talk Second.” If you acknowledge people’s fears, pain, losses, hurts, confusion, anger, etc. first, then they may calm enough to hear your thoughtful reassurances.
