Dam. Up and down the block, people told TMJ4 they are angry, confused, and that there should not be a memorial here for Shanaria Wilson. She should have never been shot, they said.
One resident showed us surveillance video on a smartphone but said she didn't have permission to share it. You can see a group of kids playing and then suddenly scatter.
"My action was to run back home, grab some towels, some gloves, some stuff. Got ready, ran out there," a neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, told TMJ4 news.
Family says Shanaria was a student at Audubon Middle School. They say she was independent and had a bright future. She loved dancing, TikTok, and doing hair. Her stepfather, Reginald Moton, says his heart is broken.
Police have been walking the block where the girls were shot.
"We're out here to show we're out here, we care," MPD Captain Patrick Pajot said. "We're here for the community. We're here to support the community."
That hasn't eased the concerns of many who live here.
"Why shoot when you see innocent people out here? So many bullets out there. My reaction, my mood right now, is to lay low, be aware, and know where I'm at," a neighbor anonymously told TMJ4 News.
Shanaria is among three killed in shootings over the weekend in Milwaukee. At least 21 people were shot in 18 separate shootings from Saturday until overnight Monday, police say. Milwaukee County has recorded 71 homicides so far this year.
