Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), the President of Mexico, has often presented a rhetoric of peace and reconciliation in his approach to dealing with the country’s powerful drug cartels. He promotes a policy of "hugs, not bullets" (abrazos, no balazos), emphasizing social programs and economic development to address the root causes of crime rather than relying solely on military force. However, this rhetoric does not align with the reality on the ground for several reasons:
  1. Continued Violence and Crime: Despite AMLO’s peaceful rhetoric, Mexico continues to experience high levels of violence and crime. Homicide rates have remained alarmingly high, and the power and influence of cartels persist across many regions. The cartels are still heavily involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and other criminal activities.
  2. Cartel Influence and Control: In many areas, cartels have significant control over local governments and economies. They operate with impunity, often outmatching local law enforcement in terms of resources and firepower. This undermines the state's ability to enforce law and order and protect its citizens.
  3. Inconsistent Enforcement: While AMLO speaks of reducing violence through non-violent means, there have been instances where the government has had to resort to military intervention. These actions sometimes contradict his stated policy and highlight the challenges the government faces in dealing with powerful and violent criminal organizations.
  4. Human Rights Concerns: The strategy of non-confrontation has also led to criticisms regarding human rights. Victims of cartel violence and their families often feel neglected and unprotected by the government’s approach. There is a perception that the state is failing to ensure justice and security for its citizens.
  5. Economic and Social Factors: Although AMLO emphasizes addressing poverty and social inequality as a means to combat crime, the implementation of these programs has been slow and uneven. The immediate impact on cartel operations and violence has been minimal, leaving the root causes of crime largely unaddressed in the short term.

President Obrador of Mexico took a trip to Sinaloa recently to talk up a new highway project that was under construction. During this trip the people who were accompanying him by car while he was in a helicopter were stopped at a checkpoint by heavily armed men. The problem? These men were not in the army or part of a police department.

After the harrowing event, AMLO decided to continue his day of delusions by attempting to play down the situation to those in the media and others who were gathered.
