Irineos confronts the annual deluge, as western Easter approaches, of protestant citations to the Good Thief as vindication of the modern protestant "faith alone" salvation theology, and even claims that the Good Thief is the model or paradigm of our salvation. Some even claim that the Church Fathers support their interpretation. Looking holistically at scripture and the Fathers, Abp. Irineos urges that not only do neither support the modern conception of "faith alone" salvation, but that making that example normative is extremely dangerous to Christian believers.
