show moreAriel Castro, born on July 10, 1960, was an American criminal and former school bus driver who became infamous as the "Ohio Kidnapper." He abducted three women—Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus—in Cleveland, Ohio, between 2002 and 2004. Castro held them captive in his home on Seymour Avenue for nearly a decade, subjecting them to severe abuse and deprivation. The women were finally rescued on May 6, 2013, when Berry managed to escape and alert neighbors, who called the police. Castro was arrested that same day. In August 2013, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years without the possibility of parole. Castro was found dead in his prison cell a month later, on September 3, 2013, in what was ruled a suicide by hanging.
