This Book examines the writings of late 19th-century British aesthetes, particularly Walter Pater, Oscar Wilde, Vernon Lee, and Michael Field, through the lens of queer theory. It argues that these writers, despite living in a homophobic society, developed unique theories of subjectivity and self-expression that anticipated later queer thought. The analysis focuses on how these authors used aesthetic concepts, especially Hegel's dialectic and the "negative," to explore homoerotic desire and create innovative literary styles. The book challenges traditional interpretations of aestheticism and offers a new understanding of its relationship to the development of queer identity and cultural critique. It also contrasts the experiences of queer male and female aesthetes, highlighting the different ways they navigated historical representations of their desires.
