Susan is passionate about helping those going through the painful process of divorce. She has a great deal of experience in this area and understands the overwhelming disruption divorce brings to life, for both the adults and children involved. She is committed to making this difficult event as manageable as possible.

Susan believes strongly in the practice of mindfulness-the core of behavioral therapy and finds strength in being grateful and recognizes the value of embracing life with arms wide open.

Susan Pava is a psychotherapist in private practice out of an office in White Plains, NY and online. She completed her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Iona College and is systemically trained. Additionally, she received extensive training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Susan has also worked with clients struggling with substance abuse in an outpatient setting where co-occurring mental illness is often the norm. Along with individuals, she has also worked with both their families and spouses in this arena as well. She finds DBT skill’s training has been very effective here, vastly improving the quality of life for many.

Susan has worked with clients dealing with mood disorders, couples’ issues, family stressors, and more, employing an eclectic approach to therapy as determined by the client’s needs and comfort. Her goal is to provide a warm, compassionate environment in which she and the client may develop a connection that feels safe to do the necessary work in reaching the client’s goals.

Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% in how we deal with it. True joy and happiness rarely happens without pain and suffering. Whether it is making lemonade when life gives you lemons or finding that silver lining in a bad experience, I take pride in moving forward and trying to have a positive impact on the lives of others.

My journey includes a lengthy, expensive, high-conflict divorce and custody battle that was entirely unnecessary. What I learned was that the system, and less so my ex, was to blame. The system placed our children in the middle and pitted my ex and I against one another for no one’s benefit except the lawyers. And, courts allowed it to happen.

The inspiration and passion for SplitSmart.com comes from that brutal experience. My goal is to organize divorcing couples so that they can avoid a similar fate. Whether figuring out money or kids, it is amazingly simple when there is transparency, accountability and organization.

Social injustice and racial inequalities are finally getting their well deserved time in the public eye. The injustices and indignities of family court and child support also deserve attention and reform.
