For Rockaway residents, many of your are very familiar with our guest, a longtime Rockaway resident and an OG documentarian of the people in this community. You can sometimes find her surfing off the jetties uptown at beaches we will not mention.
Our guest is none other than amazingly talented Susannah Ray! Her work on long form documentary projects, such as Right Coast, A Further Shore and What are The Wild Waves Saying, explore the relationship of people and landscape and how public space offers opportunities for escape, leisure, and transcendence. Many of her projects have occurred at the intersection of city and water, describing how New Yorkers' lives are shaped by the waters that surround the city.
Her latest body of work, Down for the Day, is now showing at the Baxter Street Camera Club of New York. The exhibit gives us an intimate look at the life of beachgoers, specifically people who have made their way to Rockaway Beach. It’s a beautiful composition of the people of diverse backgrounds who make up this great city. I would dare call this a love letter to Rockaway and the magic it holds for New Yorkers.
