Empathy is our ability to recognize, feel, and respond to the needs and perspectives of others.
While it is one of the most important competencies for young people to have, empathy can also
be one of the most difficult skills to teach.
In this episode, Jessica Brown, teacher at Parker’s Chapel High School and the 2019 Gilder
Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for the state of Arkansas shares how civic engagement can
be used to develop empathy in students and create caring and engaged citizens who contribute
to the betterment of society.
