When European settlers first encountered the Tasmanian devil, it wasn't exactly love at first sight. Hearing unearthly screams, coughs, growls and snarls coming from the darkness, they went to investigate—and discovered a small, black-furred animal with white patches, red ears and a mouthful of sharp teeth.
Its unsettling vocalisations and ferocious reputation helped earn it a name worthy of a creature from a nightmare. Some accounts even describe its cries as enough to drive a person to the brink of insanity.
But is the Tasmanian devil really as fearsome as its reputation suggests?
Join Holly and Matthew as they investigate one of Australia's most distinctive native animals, the origins of its fearsome name, and the strange sounds that have made it a legend.
Some say the devil haunts Tasmania. Here at Weird Crap in Australia, we're beginning to suspect the whole island is possessed.
