The Eureka Stockade, one of the most significant events in Australian colonial history, took place when a group of gold miners, fed up with harsh taxes and unfair treatment, clashed with British soldiers in Ballarat, Victoria. The miners had been protesting against the expensive mining license system and the oppressive tactics used by authorities to enforce it. This led to an armed rebellion, where a group of around 120 miners, fortified in a makeshift stockade, faced off against an estimated 300 soldiers.
The battle lasted only about 20 minutes but resulted in the deaths of at least 22 miners and six soldiers, marking it as one of the bloodiest conflicts in Australia's colonial past.
