John Gallagher wrote a compelling article on August 12, 2019, in the Detroit Free Press that details that issues facing black-owned firms when seeking contracts in the city of Detroit. Gallagher points out that Detroit is 80% black and that the city has 49,000 black-owned firms. Despite these staggering statistics, very few firms are getting opportunities to redevelop the City, i.e., Ford's renovation of the Michigan Central Station and Little Caesars.
Gallagher points to three reasons why black-owned firms are not getting these contracts:
1. Cost of verification and certification (i.e., proving that they are minority-owned firms);
2. Cost of integrating into the vendor management system; and
3. Doubts about capacity.
In this episode, I pick up where Gallagher leaves off and I try to find the root cause as to why black-owned firms are not competing with their white counterparts. The simple answer is - WE ARE THE ROOT CAUSE. Please listen to get an understanding as to why I make this declaration.
