show moreJohn Morgan brings a blue-collar toughness to country music that is pulled straight from the only life he knows. Hailing from Sylva, North Carolina, a part of the Great Smoky Mountain region, John grew up immersed in Bluegrass tradition and toured the festival circuit each summer in a family band before he dove into songwriting and was inspired by both John Mayer and Tony Rice.
More than a year after selling everything he had to do to follow his dream, John headed to Nashville. While in Nashville, John was in an Uber where the driver recommended that he submit his work to Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy, songwriters who had a longtime working relationship with Jason Aldean. Both songwriters invited John to a songwriting session, which led the trio to submit eight songs to the country music superstar, including “Trouble with a Heartbreak” and “If I Didn’t Love You,” which was a duet with Carrie Underwood. The track was nominated for a Grammy and won Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards and two CMT Music Awards. Jason Aldean signed John to Night Train Records, his imprint with BRR Music Group.
Music fans met John Morgan earlier this year on the NBC singing competition: American Song Contest. Hosted by the Emmy and Grammy-winning Kelly Clarkson and rap music icon Snoop Dogg, John represented North Carolina when he competed against artists from other territories with his single: “Right in the Middle.” The song received great acclaim from both hosts and fans and was voted into the show’s semifinals.
In this edition of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, John Morgan spoke about the stories of “Trouble with A Heartbreak” and “I Didn’t Love You,” writing a potential hit for Kelly Clarkson, and opening for Jason Aldean on his Rock N Roll Cowboy Tour.
