show more-Emotional intelligence (EQ) is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships
-EQ is one component of a person’s make-up, along with IQ and personality
-Information enters our brain, is first transmitted to the emotional part of our brain, and then is sent to the rational/thinking part of our brain
-There are 5 components of EQ: self-awareness, self-regulation/self-management, motivation, empathy/social awareness, and relationship management/social skill
-5 steps to increase your EQ: recognize reality, envision meaning, act according to your values, identify mentors, and repeat behaviors until they become automatic
-The more you think about what you are feeling, the more developed the pathway between your rational and emotional centers of your brain becomes. When you practice improving your emotional intelligence, the connection flows smoothly in both directions
