show more- Joseph's Dreams: Joseph, favored by his father Jacob due to being the son of his old age, was given a coat of many colors. Joseph shares two dreams with his brothers where he is depicted in a superior position over them (sheaves of grain bowing to his sheaf, and the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing to him), which causes his brothers to hate him even more.
- Joseph Sold by His Brothers: Joseph's brothers, already jealous of their father's favoritism towards him, seize an opportunity when Jacob sends Joseph to check on them in Shechem. They plot to kill him but Reuben persuades them to throw him into a pit instead. While Reuben is away, the other brothers sell Joseph to Midianite traders for twenty pieces of silver who then take him to Egypt. To cover their act, they dip his coat in goat's blood and present it to Jacob, leading him to believe Joseph was killed by a wild beast.
- Jacob's Grief: Jacob mourns deeply for Joseph, refusing to be comforted, declaring he will go to his grave mourning for him.
- Joseph in Egypt: Meanwhile, Joseph is sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, in Egypt, setting the stage for the next chapters of his life.
This chapter sets up the narrative of Joseph's rise from slavery to a position of power in Egypt, showcasing themes of jealousy, betrayal, and the mysterious workings of fate or divine providence.
