In Genesis 47, Jacob and his family settle in Egypt’s land of Goshen with Pharaoh’s approval. Joseph, as Egypt’s governor, manages the famine by selling stored grain to the people. As the famine worsens, the Egyptians trade their money, livestock, land, and eventually their freedom for food, becoming Pharaoh’s servants. Joseph establishes a system where the people give one-fifth of their harvest to Pharaoh. Meanwhile, Jacob, nearing the end of his life, blesses Joseph’s sons and asks to be buried in Canaan.
