show moreJussie Smollett was convicted of staging his own hate crime and lying to police about it. In 2019 the actor claimed that two Trump supporters:
slung racial and homophobic slurs at him
tied a noose around his neck
doused him in bleach
assaulted him
The truth is that Smollett paid two Nigerian brothers he worked with to wear MAGA hats and pretend to assault him. He even gave them a script of homophobic and racist slurs to shout at him during the fake assault. And he planned to have it all happen in view of a surveillance camera.
The charges: Smollett was found guilty on 5 out of the 6 charges brought against him. He was convicted of felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report and faces up to three years in prison. He plans to appeal his conviction.
Political opportunists: Even though the allegations seemed ridiculous from the beginning, they didn't stop high-profile Democrats from using them as a political weapon. These tweets still haven't been deleted:
Joe Biden tweeted: 'What happened today to @JussieSmollett must never be tolerated in this country. We must stand up and demand that we no longer give this hate safe harbor; that homophobia and racism have no place on our streets or in our hearts. We are with you, Jussie."
Kamala Harris tweeted: "@JussieSmollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery. This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate."
This whole fiasco underscores a fundamental issue with society today. Smollett was a wealthy, somewhat famous actor [although I'd never heard of him]. But even in his position of privilege, he decided that he could advance his life by pretending to be a victim. Victimhood is now more powerful than wealth and fame in American society.
