Description
Former NBC and current Yahoo News reporter Katie Couric has been caught editing an interview with a gun rights group in a way that is completely misleading as to the...
show moreCouric's documentary on gun violence, Under The Gun, shows an interview with the pro-Second Amendment Virginia Citizens Defense League. In the interview, Couric asks the question "if there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?"
If you watch the video, you see the group sitting in silence for nine seconds, as if they cannot or refuse to provide Couric an answer.
Here is the scene from the documentary.

The problem with what was in the film is that the members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League provided an immediate answer to Couric's question, and multiple members answered the question.
The group recorded the interview with Couric and released the unedited audio to the public. (That audio is located at the top of this page.)

The producer of the documentary released a statement Wednesday afternoon that confirms they edited the group's appearance while claiming they weren't doing it to try and make the group look in a bad light.
“There are a wide range of views expressed in the film," Director Stephanie Soechtig said in her statement. "My intention was to provide a pause for the viewer to have a moment to consider this important question before presenting the facts on Americans' opinions on background checks. I never intended to make anyone look bad and I apologize if anyone felt that way.”
Couric refused to apologize for the deception, stating only "I support Stephanie's statement and am very proud of the film."
