At the corner of Clark and Montague, the five-alarm warehouse fire is finally brought under control as first and second call companies overhaul the smoldering wreckage. Rookie fireman Tim Collins lies wrapped in blankets on the sidewalk recovering from severe smoke inhalation after rescuing the building's watchman, Napoleon Bonaparte. While Battalion Chief Mandeville suspects an explosion caused the rapid third-floor burnout, the watchman is carted off to the hospital before Chief Cody can question him. Fortunately, Tim reports a crucial conversation: open paint cans left behind by painters filled the sealed floor with hazardous fumes. Earning the nickname 'Young Hooksy' like his father before him, Tim is assigned to the overnight third platoon at Hook and Ladder Company 111 and driven home by the Chief to his mother.
