show moreGod ask Abraham a question in Genesis 18:14: Is Anything Too Hard for the LORD?
The Background:
NOW THE LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks or terebinths of Mamre; as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day, He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood at a little distance from him. He ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the ground. Genesis 18:1-2
And they said to Abraham, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, She is here in the tent. The LORD said, I will surely return to you when the season comes round, and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah was listening and heard it at the tent door which was behind Him. [Rom. 9:9-12.] Genesis 18:9-10
This was according the the Promise the LORD had previously made to Abraham:
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.
At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him, “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them! Genesis 17:1-6
And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai; but Sarah [Princess] her name shall be. And I will bless her and give you a son also by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. Genesis 17:15-16
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?” Genesis 17:17
God said to Abraham, “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac [laughter]; and I will confirm and establish My covenant, MY Sovereigh Pledge with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant. Genesis 17:18-19
Pay close attention to what God said and did. God changed their Names to Remind them continually of the Promise He is Going to Achieve through them. He changed Abram's name to Abraham – meaning the father of a multitude. Any change that Sari name to Sarah – meaning princess, she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.
Abraham and Sarah had received the promise of God Himself in Genesis 17. But they were at a Turning Point realizing that it was impossible in their their own body, heart and thoughts to have a baby in their old age.
Abraham and Sarah had reached a "Crisis of Belief", Because Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in years; it had ceased to be with Sarah as with young women. She was long past the age of childbearing. Genesis 18:11
Therefore Sarah laughed to silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” Genesis 18:12
Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘How Can an 99 yr old woman like me have a baby?’Genesis 18:13
According to Genesis 11:30 Sarah had always been barren, even during her childbearing years. Now she was beyond the childbearing years. Therefore now, and only now, When all human resources are exhausted, when Abraham and Sarah BOTH Laughed at the Impossibility of God's Promise. Abraham in Genesis 17:18 and Sarah in Genesis 18:12—now God gives the promise, unlike all human promises—a promise that carries the power of His Own fulfillment (18:14):
God‘s appointed time was when it was humanly impossible for the child to be born in order to show that
it is not by human effort, but by His Divine Work and Sovereign Grace.
For he LORD said to Abraham: Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, when the season for her delivery comes around, I will return to you and Sarah shall have borne a son. [Matt. 19:26.] Genesis 18:14
The LORD ask: Is anything too hard for the LORD?
The answer is no! THE LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for her as He had promised. For Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time God had told him. And Abraham named his son whom Sarah bore to him Isaac [laughter].Genesis 21:1-3
Yes, God can, and, Yes He will do the impossible, to Bring Him Glory by calling into being things that are not, as though they were (Romans 4:17; 1 Corinthians 1:28).
Always remember – God is NEVER limited by what you think, the circumstances of your situation or the condition of your body, no matter what you, the doctors or others think is totally impossible.
Just as THE LORD said: With men this is impossible, but all things are possible with God. [Gen. 18:14; Job 42:2] Matthew 19:26
God used Abraham's and Sarah's "Crisis of Belief" as the turning point to reveal to them and to you that ALL THINGS are Possible with God. God demonstrated Who He says He is and what He said He will do, and He did it. And He will do it for you. Because He’s no respecter of persons.
God is working all around you. (John 5:17) ALL THINGS are Possible with God. When you realize you cannot do it on your own, if God does not help you.
