VIII. The “Hero” of the Dream

The secret of salvation is but this: that you are doing this unto yourself. ²No matter what the form of the attack, this still is true. ³Whoever takes the role of enemy and of attacker, still is this the truth. ⁴Whatever seems to be the cause of any pain and suffering you feel, this is still true. ⁵For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. ⁶Let them be as hateful and as vicious as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recognize it is your dream. 11. To the extent to which you value guilt, to that extent will you perceive a world in which attack is justified. ²To the extent to which you recognize that guilt is meaningless, to that extent you will perceive attack cannot _be_ justified. ³This is in accord with perception’s fundamental law: You see what you believe is there, and you believe it there because you want it there. ⁴Perception has no other law than this. ⁵The rest but stems from this, to hold it up and offer it support. ⁶This is perception’s form, adapted to this world, of God’s more basic law; that love creates itself, and nothing but itself.
