show moreMark has an extensive academic background in brain research and teaching. He is an honorary professor of cognitive neuroscience, with over 25 years experience conducting behavioural and brain imaging research focusing on our social skills. He has taught the fundamentals of neuroscience to a wide range of students, as well as publishing more than 70 scientific articles and worked at MIT in the USA and multiple universities in Australia. His work has been highlighted in the media both locally [e.g., Mirror Mirror (Channel Ten), Our Brain, Magic and the Brain, Music and the Brain, Making Australia Happy (ABC), Sunrise (Channel 7), Screen Time is Affecting Learning (SkyNews)] and internationally [e.g., The Guardian (UK), New York Times (USA), Economist, New Scientist, Leading Edge, (BBC: UK), Science in Action (BBC; International)].
Mark is a return guest to our show, but also a great friend. Dr. Williams has been called the "Neuroscientist Committed to Creating a Brain Healthy World." In his words, "the most important asset in any organization is…the brains of your people!" This week on our 200th episode of the podcast Mark and Gunter will engage in a conversation about human beings success as the most dominant species on earth and thats in large part due to our need to connect and cooperate. It was our ability to socialize and connect that catapulted our species to phenomenal heights of innovation, through collaboration and specialization. This drive has fine-tuned our unconscious perception of faces, facial expressions, body language, and touch. We will also dive into Mark's new book "The Connected Species" that shows us how to recapture the drive for connection in a way that will help us look past our differences and reconnect, even with those whom we perceive to be outside our groups.
