Three full-size mechanical sharks were built for Jaws and tested in a freshwater tank. Salt water ate the hydraulics, the skin waterlogged, and the rig sank. The shoot ran to more than twice its schedule and roughly double its budget, and the crew started calling the film Flaws. What Spielberg shot instead — a yellow barrel, a low camera under the water, faces reacting to nothing — is why the film still works, and why the shark is on screen for only a few minutes.
