Jueces 9: No dejes que las posiciones ni las posesiones te dañen.
Jueces 9:1-6:
Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal fue a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos y con toda la familia de la casa paterna de su madre, diciendo: —Hablen, por favor, a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: “¿Qué es mejor para ustedes: que todos los setenta hijos de Jerobaal los gobiernen, o que un solo hombre los gobierne? Acuérdense de que yo soy hueso suyo y carne suya”.
Los hermanos de su madre dijeron todas estas cosas a favor de él a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem. Y el corazón de ellos se inclinó a favor de Abimelec porque decían: “Es nuestro hermano”. Le dieron ochocientos gramos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con las cuales Abimelec contrató a sueldo a hombres ociosos y temerarios que lo siguieron.
Él fue a la casa de su padre en Ofra y mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres, sobre una misma piedra. Pero quedó Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, porque se escondió.
Entonces se reunieron todos los señores de Siquem con todos los de Bet-milo. Y fueron y proclamaron a Abimelec como rey, junto a la encina que está al lado de la piedra ritual en Siquem.
V. 55-57:
Y cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que Abimelec había muerto, se fue cada uno a su lugar.
Así Dios devolvió a Abimelec el mal que él había hecho contra su padre, cuando mató a sus setenta hermanos. Dios hizo que toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem volviera sobre sus cabezas. Y cayó sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam hijo de Jerobaal.

Abimelec es un personaje muy conocido, no precisamente por su valor para salvar y liberar, sino por la maldad que ocasionó en su ambición de poder.
Al morir su padre, Abimelec usó la astucia y se asoció con la familia de su madre para matar a todos sus hermanos. Uno sobrevivió y proclamó una profecía contra Abimelec y los habitantes de la región que se asociaron con él.

Aquí vemos el peligro de caer en esa ambición corrompida por el hambre de poder, de querer tener una posición superior ante los demás.
Posiblemente Abimelec era tenido en poco ante sus hermanos por ser hijo de una concubina y no ser hijo de una de las esposas de Gedeón. En ese tiempo, el estatus de esposa y de concubina eran diferentes, aunque cumplían una misma función, con derechos similares. Posiblemente Abimelec no tenía la misma fuerza, poder y fama de los otros hijos pero esto no le daba derecho a exterminar a sus hermanos. Este genocidio innecesario, donde sobrevivió solo uno de setenta hermanos, hizo que Abimelec se autoproclamara rey de Israel. La dicha no le duró mucho porque a los pocos años tuvo conflictos con sus antiguos socios de crímenes, pelearon entre sí y se autodestruyeron.

La envidia y la arrogancia junto con una ambición de poder y de riquezas conducen a un lugar muy oscuro donde el ser humano no ve lo que está haciendo, no escucha consejos de advertencia ni corrección y no siente el daño que está produciendo sobre otros.
Guardemos nuestro corazón de construir algún plan o proyecto basado en una ambición o deseo donde Dios no está ahí. Consulta al Señor si eso que quieres obtener está bajo su voluntad, si realmente es un anhelo genuino, honesto y benigno, de alcanzar una meta basada en propósitos nobles para ayudar a otros, lejos de la avaricia y alguna especie de malicia.
Pídele al Señor que te dirija y te responda si alcanzar esa posición en el trabajo, o esa nueva adquisición como una casa o un vehículo nuevo, te bendecirá o te destruirá.
Muchos que persiguen un propósito y lo alcanzan, terminan revelando lo que había en su corazón; un corazón que desprecia a Dios y se aleja de la iglesia, abandonado a su esposa y sus hijos, terminando con otras parejas, hundiéndose en el goce temporal de una posición de poder y de abundancia económica y embriagados de altivez con una conciencia cauterizada.
En cambio, otros llegan a un lugar de eminencia de forma legítima, sin pisotear su fe y convicciones en Dios, honran a sus esposas que los apoyan para llegar ahí, piensan en el bienestar de sus hijos, y ayudan a otros cuando Dios los bendice y les permite llegar más alto. Ellos se convierten en instrumentos de Dios aquí en la tierra y se convierten en alguien como Abraham que es bendecido y bendice a multitudes.
Guarda tu corazón de desviarte de Dios, quien quita y pone reyes.
A diferencia de Abraham que siempre fue bendición a donde iba, Abimelec destruyó a muchos, y en el proceso se destruyó a sí mismo, muriendo de una forma trágica y vergonzosa, cuando una mujer tiró un objeto pesado por una ventana y lo descalabró.
Gracias a Dios por aquellos como tú que todavía se mantienen firmes, inamovibles en sus convicciones y en su compromiso con Dios y sus familias, aunque escalen a lugares de reconocimiento y de abundancia material, o ante la tentación de un placer temporal de la carne o del mundo.

Judges 9: Don't let positions or possessions harm you.

Judges 9:1-6:
Then Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, “Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and bone.”
And his mother’s brothers spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem; and their heart was inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men; and they followed him. Then he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself. And all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem.

V. 55-57:
And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed, every man to his place.
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. And all the evil of the men of Shechem God returned on their own heads, and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Abimelech is a well-known character, not precisely because of his courage to save and liberate, but because of the evil that he caused in his ambition for power.
When his father died, Abimelech used cunning and associated with his mother's family to kill all his brothers. One survived and proclaimed a prophecy against Abimelech and the inhabitants of the region who associated with him.

Here we see the danger of falling into that ambition corrupted by the hunger for power, of wanting to have a superior position before others.
Possibly Abimelech was held in little by his brothers for being the son of a concubine and not being the son of one of Gideon's wives. At that time, the status of wife and concubine were different, although they fulfilled the same function. Possibly Abimelech did not have the same strength, power and fame as the other sons, but this did not give him the right to exterminate his brothers. This unnecessary genocide, where only one of seventy brothers survived, made Abimelech proclaim himself king of Israel. The joy did not last long because after a few years he had conflicts with his former partners in crime, they fought with each other and self-destructed.

Envy and arrogance together with an ambition for power and riches lead to a very dark place where the human being does not see what he is doing, does not listen to warning or correction advice and does not feel the damage he is doing to others.
Let us keep our hearts from building some plan or project based on an ambition or desire where God is not there. Consult the Lord if what you want to obtain is under His will and is really a genuine, honest and benign desire to achieve a goal based on noble purposes to help others, far from greed and some kind of malice.
Ask the Lord to guide you and answer you whether attaining that position at work, or that new acquisition like a new house or vehicle, will bless or destroy you.
Many who pursue a purpose and achieve it, end up revealing what was in their hearts; a heart that despises God and walks away from the church, abandoning his wife and children, ending up with other couples, sinking into the temporary enjoyment of a position of power and economic abundance and intoxicated with arrogance with a cauterized conscience.
Instead, others rise to a place of eminence legitimately, without trampling on their faith and convictions in God, honoring their wives who support them to get there, thinking about the well-being of their children, and helping others when God blesses them and allows them to reach higher. They become instruments of God here on earth and become someone like Abraham who is blessed and blesses multitudes.
Keep your heart from straying from God, who removes and sets up kings.

Unlike Abraham who was always a blessing wherever he went, Abimelech destroyed many, and in the process he destroyed himself, dying in a tragic and embarrassing way, when a woman threw a heavy object through a window and it crushed him.
Thank God for those like you who still stand firm, unshakable in their convictions and in their commitment to God and their families, even if they climb to places of recognition and material abundance, or when tempted by a temporary pleasure of the flesh or the world.
