show moreIn coming to grips with the realization things currently are out of the band's control, Karnivool have elected to celebrate the milestone with a one-off Livestream event from the Heath Ledger Centre in Perth on May 12.
Guitarist Hoss caught up with HEAVY to discuss the show and his memories from that great album, starting with how deeply the music on Sound Awake still resonates with the band some ten years later.
"As a band, we tend to overwrite,” he measured, “so most of the stuff on Sound Awake there's probably 15 different versions that never got released. I know for a fact I've got a hard drive here in the studio full of stuff that never got released that we could probably put another three or four albums together off. It's just the way the band does it and has always has. We can't leave rocks unturned so I... we've even spoken about it; think about the day we start releasing the album of B sides, kind of like Radiohead, and I think there would be a lot of good stuff there from the Sound Awake period and even before that with Themata. You're always thinking about those things and those things are always coming through your mind and going out the door at the same time but also at the same time, it feels so quick. It seems to flash by so quickly, even the whole writing process of an album seems to flash by so quickly. You're playing a song and you spend a lot of time on it but once it's done you move on to the next one or whatever is happening next so you don't give yourself a lot of time to reflect - which we probably should I guess at some point in time. There is also something nice about that set and forget, do and let go kind of vibe that allows you a bit of a chance to move on and hopefully get better or do something different in the future."
In the full interview, Hoss talks about the live stream and how they plan to tackle it, memories from the recording of Sound Awake, the lasting legacy of the albums music, new songs and the possibility of a new album and more.
