Don Carlos is a Dramatic Poem in 5 acts written by the German classical playwright and poet Friedrich von Schiller. It was first performed on stage in Hamburg in 1787. The story is loosely based on the historical conflict between King Phillip II of Spain and his son and heir Don Carlos. But Schiller adds many fictional elements, in particular a love affair between Carlos and his step-mother Queen Elizabeth and the character of the Marquis de Posa who is depicted as a champion of liberty and religious tolerance, ideas more in line with the enlightenment thinking of the 18th Century than those of 16th century Spain. This play is the basis for Giuseppe Verdi's opera Don Carlos. - Summary by Alan Mapstone Cast List: Phillip II, King of Spain: ToddHW Don Carlos, son of Phillip: Greg Giordano Elizabeth de Valois, Queen of Spain: Agnes Robert Behr Marquis de Posa: Inkell Princess Eboli: Jenn Broda Duke of Alva: Beeswaxcandle Domingo: Algy Pug Count Lerma: Michael Faze Duke of Feria: Adrian Stephens Duke of Medina Sidonia: Antony St. Pierre Prince of Parma: Ehsan Ahmed Mehedi Don Raimond de Taxis: Larry Wilson Grand Inquistor: JosephS Prior: Larry Wilson Don Louis Mercado: David Lawrence Infanta Clara Farnese: Inkell Duchess D'Olivarez: Winnifred Assmann Marchioness de Mondecar: Owler Countess Fuentes: Stacey Malcolm Pages: Winnifred Assmann Officer: David Purdy Narration: Alan Mapstone Audio Editor: Inkell
