In the Season 2 premiere of the Shifting the Culture podcast, we start the new year by celebrating the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. In honor of her birthday, we dive into some of her best hip-hop collaborations which helped solidify her legacy as one of the greats. Since it was Martin Luther King's 95 birthday, we decided to name some socially conscious records that were inspired by his spirit.

We also debate whether Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) was out of pocket for suggesting Drake isn't hip-hop and saying he makes "shopping music". Rock the Bells named Havoc's Shook Ones Pt. 2 as the greatest hip-hop beat of all time and we debate if they got it right.

In a nostalgic segment, we celebrate the anniversary of John Singleton's Higher Learning which tackled numerous social issues and life on college campus. Additionally, we recall some of the most hilarious moments from the Wayans Brothers parody movie, Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Finally, to close out the show, we reflect on the L.O.X.'s debut album, Money, Power, Respect.
