When she first entered the music scene, she was an Asian woman in a Western country. Against the odds, Singapore-born, Canada-bred Masia One made a name for herself in Hollywood. Her work has evolved from breaking Asian stereotypes to empowering women, particularly in the realm of sexuality. In December 2020, Masia and fellow artiste Elaine Lim, also known as General Ling, created the song “Not All That Glitters Is Gold” after a headlining artiste allegedly sexually assaulted a member of her team. On International Women’s Day March 8 this year, Masia One released “Vulva Vocabulary”, a body-positive message to #BreaktheBias. Born in Singapore, and raised in Canada, she earned her stripes in the American music industry; this artist is reconnecting with her roots in Asia and re-emerging as the Far East Empress. Masia One is not only an artist but also an entrepreneur and cultural ambassador. Her music cuts through the drone of life, inspiring people to reign as their royal selves. Her journey has been an unlikely path to becoming a full-time Hip Hop artist after graduating in Architecture from the University of Toronto. Her unique sound and courageous journey paved the way for her work with top artists and eminent producers such as Pharrell, John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Che Vicious (G.O.O.D. Music, Kanye West, Jay-Z). Her music has also been featured on Netflix series like Tiny Pretty Things, Snowpiercer, Wu Assassins, and Altered Carbon, and sampled for the title track for Fast & Furious 8.
