So much of African American history is not found in American institutional platforms..., Jazz In The City explores how Jazz as part of the African American cultural diaspora has influenced American and Global cultures. Jazz as an art has been a vehicle for African American Jazz artists to transport their artistry around the world.
One of these great Jazz artists, renowned drummer Otis "Candy" Finch moved his family to Seattle in the late '70's after playing drums around the world with Jazz icons such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Shirley Scott, Cedar Walton and many others.
Today, Dr. Gore chats with Candy's sons Akim and Hakim Finch about their dad; growing up around so many Jazz luminaries and about their family's journey from New York City to Los Angeles and finally to Seattle.
