U.S. pitcher Jennie Finch pitched four innings, surrendering one run on four hits. Finch, perhaps the most popular softball player ever and winner of numerous Player of the Year awards in college, caught the attention of the Tech players as soon as they stepped on the field.
Relieving Finch was three-time SEC pitcher of the year and first-year Team USA member Monica Abbott, who allowed two hits through the last three innings against the Hokies. The lone run came in the second inning when senior catcher Kelsey Hoffman led off with a double in the right-field gap. Pinch running for Hoffman, sophomore Anna Zitt moved to third on an illegal pitch by Finch. Two outs later, Stolle was able to bring Zitt home with a bloop single. Junior first baseman Beth Walker led all Tech hitters at the plate, accounting for two of the team's six hits. Junior designated hitter Jenna Rhodes and junior second baseman Erin Ota also contributed with a hit apiece.
