Sydney based industrial outfit Our Last Enemy have upped the ant with their latest single “Decline Atrophy”, not only in terms of musical and sonic awareness but more so by way of thinking outside of the box that so many metal bands find themselves cornered into and creating a piece of music that is as surprising for its complexity and additional elements as it is for its raw and abrasive edge.

Bass player Matt Heywood sat down with HEAVY to discuss the new single and future plans for Our Last Enemy.

We start by asking him to describe what the band was going for musically with “Decline Atrophy”.

"I guess it would change depending on who you ask but we all had input on the songwriting," he measured. "We are quite a slow band when it comes to writing, just because we all have different ideas and feelings and we try to throw it all in a can together and shake it up and see what comes out, but for me I really wanted this song to have a strong backbone. The vision was to have it hard-hitting with some groove, a bit of angst, and the outro is the part that I'm most proud of. It was definitely an area where we pushed ourselves musically. We really went... I felt like I, as a songwriter, stepped out of my own shadow and we really delivered something that a lot of people might not be expecting. I felt like we were able to do it in a tasteful way where we weren't kind of abandoning what people have come to know us for in terms of our sound and pushing what we do to that next level."
