In this lecture on Plato's Laches, two Athenian generals and two elder statesmen ask Socrates whether young men should train in armed combat—only to be drawn into a deeper question: what is courage? Each attempted definition (standing firm in battle, endurance, knowing what to hope for and fear) collapses under questioning, repeatedly returning to confusion that reveals courage can't be understood apart from virtue as a whole. The lecture traces how this cyclical pattern of inquiry embodies the Greek "Dorian mode," where word and deed must move in harmony, and truth emerges not through solitary insight but through companions pursuing a shared question together.
