This chapter includes the hot button topic of the label GIRLBOSS. I have a differing opinion than Rachel offers in the book as I personally love the title. I don't feel it marginalizes me or leaves me less than qualified. I embrace the title and am glad to do all things as a female. I discuss how women's brains work differently than men's and I acknowledge that while I think I can do anything men can do, I don't want to be labeled one of the boys.
Chapter 11: Choose One Dream and Go All In
I was a stay at home Mom for 10 years and did that with all that I had.
Then, I launched a business, put my head down, and committed to growing it for 2 years. I gave it all my dedication during that time. After that, I committed to bringing awareness to the human trafficking cause and mentoring survivors. This podcast followed that and I spent six months focused on its growth and success.
I am a multifaceted entrepreneur that believes we can do all the things, we just can’t do them ALL at once. We have to give our focus to one thing at a time then move on to the next.
I had the chance to meet Christy Wright a while back before launching The Power Project. Her advice to me was to find your one key theme that rings true in all that you do in life and business. Focus on that and make sure it applies to everything you speak about, post about, and put into the world. Find out how your audience wants to learn and focus on that one thing. Do they want retreats, ladies nights, a podcast, a blog. Focus on that one avenue and serve them there.
Chapter 12: Embrace Your Ambition
What does the Bible say about ambition?
As christians, we've mostly grown up hearing ambition as a bad word. The most commonly referenced scripture I remember is
Phil 2:3 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself”
However, here is another scripture that tells us to work hard, mind our own business, and focus on our own achievements:
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12: so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Ambition: definition: a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.
Greek meaning: “to esteem as an honor”.
Ambition on its own is not bad. Just like money on its own is not bad. “The love of money…”
Its what we do with it. Do we use our ambition to bring glory to us or glory to him? He put that drive in our hearts. Are we giving him credit for it? Are we bringing glory to him through what we accomplish with it? Are we following what he has laid out for us and trusting his understanding and not our own? Are we saying yes to his call or are we following our own call?
When I was first called to the Human Trafficking cause, I was concerned that I was trusting my own ambition. I wanted to make sure it was from God and not my own thought process. My good friend, and pastor’s wife, pointed out that the best way for me to realize it was from God was that it scared me and it wasn’t something I would ever choose to do on my own. So, that’s how I guage things moving forward. Does it scare the crap out of me? Probably from God and not me…. Now don’t get me wrong, use intuition and common sense here. Stepping into a pit of rattle snakes: not from God….
If I don’t have to struggle with a decision, pray about it, or weigh the odds, it’s probably my own ambition.
