Just listened to a very fine discussion. Even here though the topic of mental health and substance abuse treatment I think gets a too narrow approach. It's not that more resources, properly allocated, won't make a difference but I never hear what is readily known by anyone who has had to deal with these problems for any length of time. People with these issues usually have to be coerced at least to some extent to enter treatment and regularly stop attending, stop taking medication etc. almost always when someone with mental health problems cones to notoriety and the story has people complaining that thry needed treatment they had actually been placed, often repeatedly, but wouldn't attend or more likely would go for awhile, stop, be cajoled back then stop again. Some of this is because counselors are in an office and not frequently going out to the person which can help with keeping people involved but resistance to treatment is a significant part of mentsl illness and substance abuse.
