Having been raised by his grandmother from an early age, Steven Velasquez decided to move his life to the streets where at the age of 7, he was introduced to the street gang life. For 25+ years that’s all he knew; seeing very little of what one would consider a normal life. In and out of juvenile detention, and then jail and prison, his dislike for himself fueled his addictions, living a life of crime, drugs, and chaos. One would think that reconnecting with his mom, who recently overcame her own drug addictions, would help him get his life under control, yet it didn't. Now, thanks to the pull of his mom and daughter, mixed with the love and concern of staff at a recovery center, as well as an employer who was willing to give him a chance, Steven finds himself sober, working, and developing a career as an electrician. I’m confident most of us can't even begin to imagine the woes of a life like Steven's. Join us as we get into the weeds of his tumultuous life.
“For me it came down to first fixing the issues that I had with myself. The lack of love for myself and the lack of care for my well being, right? And fixing all these certain things that I had. You can’t build a house on a shaky foundation because then the whole thing’s gonna fall. The most selfless thing I could’ve done for my daughter, for my family, for anybody that cared about me was to be super selfish and work on myself at first.” 48:36
