show moreThe news of the day: Do you find it a challenge to balance on one leg? Do you hold on to the wall or a counter or maybe your couch to maintain your balance? Orientation or the position of your body is a large part of your body’s ability to maintain equilibrium and coordination. Providing support is never a bad thing as it helps your brain to connect with where you are in space. Our balance is maintained by the information being sent to the brain by all the sensors throughout our body from the ears, eyes and our muscles. Each little nuance of motion is key information for the brain to be able to keep our body in balance and establish where it is in space. That is called proprioception. If you want to start improving your balance or your success holding a certain pose, try changing your orientation. If you normally do it standing . . . as in the one-legged pose for balance, try being flat on the floor. Your body parts are still assuming the same positions, but gravity is now working in your favor. It is endless easier to lie on the floor with your feet dorsiflexed and your knee bent than that same position is while standing on the floor. The great part is, your body is mapping the sensations of those body parts so when you practice on your back you will be helping to improve that pose when you transition back to the standing pose. You may not notice it immediately, but it will help you to achieve a better sense of balance.
Other things in life may have the same solution. When you are trying to tackle a problem or make a decision, there are times when the process seems daunting. Maybe you just need a change in orientation. Change how you are looking at the situation. Maybe change your perspective. What does it look like from the customer’s side, the sales’ side or maybe there are legal ramifications? Maybe physically change where you are located while you are evaluating your options. Maybe go for a drive, a walk or a run. Talk it over with someone who is not so connected with the project to get a fresh perspective. Or discuss it with the individuals who will be responsible for implementing what you are creating. Change your orientation and allow your mind and body to secure its place in space.
