As O has told me many times, Severed Conscience is a diagnosis, it is a state of mind where an individual is trapped by social media and held in a state of constant reaction. This is not a thinking state, it is a response to stimuli that are aimed at us from algorithms that release different messages and images, maintaining that dopamine dance of elation and anger, peaks and lulls. People can be attracted to that anger as it can be confused with proactive action to a dangerous threat. We are creatures who have a strong fight or flight instinct, and social media can penetrate our other higher thinking abilities to stir deeper emotion which overwhelms us. Our culture has been shaped by the theme that when we are online we can make countless connections, but those connections are just one dimension if you remain confined to a constant fire of 280 character responses.

Our series has been a mixture of neural science, history, countless observations of our own behavior online and research into technology that is used to “keep you on the platform”. Those are the words of a Facebook founder. Today we see studies of teens with severe mental health issues, and these conditions sadly coincide with what we reviewed at the beginning of our analysis.

This segment called Land Grab is a podcast that took place just prior to Kelly and O and I embarking on our Severed Conscience project, and you will hear how the themes from our documentary were percolating in our minds during conversations of land rights, Covid protocols and behavioral control enacted by the state. This conversation took place with the Lock Downs still very close in our rear view mirror. What follows is our projections of where the climate change movement might head while using some of the same behavioral techniques we would later describe in Severed Conscience.
