We learned that two competing families, the Putnams and the Porters, sought to control the region. Seeking more autonomy, the Putnams wanted to form a new church and control tax collection. They used the Witch Trials as a means to achieve that end against the Porters. Hysteria and fear were critical factors that were wielded effectively resulting in the execution of 19 people.
