Finals Recap
Trey Keeley of Illinois won the night's first Greco-Roman title of the night topping Minnesota's Patrick McKee 12-8 at 88 pounds. Keeley built a 7-0 lead early in the match after scoring a pushout, a takedown and consecutive two-point gutwrenches. McKee started to close the gap and got within 8-7 before Keeley hit a beautiful front headlock throw for four points to essentially put the match out of reach.
California's Nicolas Aguilar captured the championship at 94 pounds beating Brandon Meikel of Utah 7-2. Aguilar built a comfortable 4-0 lead in the early part of the first period with a takedown and a gutwrench. Meikel converted a bodylock for a takedown to cut the lead in half. Meikel again went on the offensive, trying to hit an armspin in the second period, but Aguilar stuffed the attempt and came out on top for the takedown to extend his lead to 6-2. A late pushout would put the final score at 7-2.
Arizona crowned its 11th Cadet Greco-Roman champion as Roman Bravo-Young finished off a headlock at 4:56 to pin Michigan's Dominic Lajoie at 100 pounds. Bravo-Young had four technical falls and two falls during his championship performance.
Ian Timmons became the second champion in Cadet Greco-Roman from Nevada. Timmons pinned Drew West of Iowa at 3:35 to win gold at 106 pounds. West got up 5-0 on a four-point throw from the headpinch position. He would add an appreciation point on a lift attempt moments later. Timmons answered by countering a West throw attempt for two exposure points. Then Timmons would launch West for five points to take the lead. The lead would extend to 11-5 after a takedown and a two-point gutwrench. In the second period, West got caught on his back with a front headlock roll and Timmons held and got the fall.
Illinois' Austin Gomez won his second straight Cadet Greco-Roman championship by defeating Bryce West of Iowa 18-8 at 113. Gomez was nearly pinned in the first period and fell behind early, but after rallying to tie the score at 8-8, Gomez put up 10 straight points and countered every one of West's short offense attempts.
INTERVIEW
Texan Coltan Williams won his state's 10th Cadet Greco-Roman championship. Williams defeated North Carolina's Wilson Smith 8-5 at 120 pounds. Smith started things off with a big four-point throw before Williams hit what is sure to be one of the five-pointers of the year to take the lead 5-4. Williams extended his lead to 8-4 after a pushout and a takedown. Smith tried to work his offense from double unders and Williams was penalized one point for fleeing the hold late in the bout.
