Best of Three Match 2
Two big four-point moves and one takedown was all that Jimmy Kennedy needed to beat 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott 10-0 in the second match at 61kg to claim a spot on the U.S. World Team for the first time. The match was slowed due to the cut above Scott's left eye. Kennedy won the Yasar Dogu back in February in Turkey.
When Nick Marable last stepped on the raised platform in Fargo with a big match, he came away as Tennessee's first Cadet freestyle champion back in 2003. On Thursday, Marable stepped off the mat after his 8-2 victory over James Green as a member of the U.S. World Team. Marable's victory in the second match in the best-of-three series saw a lot of the trademark counter offense he's known for. He also showed proficiency in par terre, turning Green twice.
Best of Three Match 1
Jimmy Kennedy converted a double leg takedown with 41 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and top Coleman Scott 5-2 in the first match of a best-of-three series at 61kg. Scott jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of pushouts before Kennedy got on the board with a pushout of his own on a double leg attack with 14 seconds remaining in the first.
Kennedy tied the score at 2-2 with a second pushout from a double leg attempt and went ahead with 41 to go with another double attempt. A late attack by Scott drew ooohs from the crowd, but Scott couldn't get a third supporting point down to gain control. He challenged and lost, giving Kennedy the fifth point.
Action as a little slower at 70kg as Nick Marable topped James Green 2-1 in the first match of the best-of-three series. Green took the lead 1-0 with a minute to go in the first after scoring a caution point after Marable was unable to score after being put on the shot clock. In the second, Marable initiated a halfshot, getting Green to bite and counter with a shot of his own. Marable battled the position and got the go-behind for the takedown and the 2-1 lead, which held for the victory.
