The ongoing strike between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has caused confusion among social media influencers. These influencers, who often work alongside both organizations, find themselves in an unclear position within the entertainment industry. In response to this confusion, SAG-AFTRA has issued guidelines urging influencers to refrain from promoting films and TV series, even if they are not members of the guild. The organization encourages everyone, regardless of membership, to support the strike. Non-member influencers who continue to work with studios and streamers during the strike may face consequences such as being barred from future guild membership and potentially being blacklisted.
The guidelines set by SAG-AFTRA clarify that influencers should fulfill their existing contracts but should avoid taking up new projects. They are also discouraged from posting about struck work on social media, even as fans. However, influencers are still allowed to pursue brand-partnership jobs covered by the SAG-AFTRA Influencer Agreement and/or Influencer Waiver. This distinction aims to provide clarity amidst the confusion surrounding influencers' involvement during the strike.
The strike itself has garnered significant attention, with over 160,000 actors and performers joining in. The absence of A-list actors from movie production has created a void that executives are keen to fill. As a result, they have turned to social media influencers from platforms like TikTok to fill this gap. However, one TikTok influencer, known as @Straw_Hat_Goofy, faced controversy for crossing the picket line and expressing callous views on the strike. This behavior is considered "scab" work, referring to non-union workers who take the place of striking union members. Participating in scab work can result in a ban from joining unions. This strike presents a unique challenge for actors and creators as it is the first to occur in the age of social media.
In conclusion, social media influencers find themselves navigating a complex landscape during the SAG-AFTRA strike. While some influencers have expressed solidarity with the striking unions, others have faced backlash for initially stating they would continue to work. SAG-AFTRA's guidelines aim to provide clarity and ensure that influencers are aware of their responsibilities during this time. The strike itself presents new challenges for actors and creators, as it involves navigating social media platforms and addressing controversies surrounding scab work.
