About Alice Cravens

Alice Cravens created Modern Tea in 2004, a restaurant in Hayes Valley’s San Francisco that also supplied Tea to top bay area restaurants. On her days off, she collaborated with a youth garden organization, Community Grows, and found working with the youth was magical. This led her to Ida B. Wells High School in 2009; she was able to teach a CTE (Career Technical Education) course where the skills they build “last long after the dishes are done.” The program is called Heat of the Kitchen.

With more than 25 years of experience in image consulting and public relations, Armstrong enjoys helping people “be their best, by looking and feeling their best” in body and spirit by advising about skincare, makeup, grooming, overall personal appearance, presentation skills, and job readiness training, she also teaches in the Fashion Department at City College of San Francisco.

Working in the underserved Bayview Hunter’s Point neighborhood in San Francisco, Armstrong is the Founder of the Primed & Prepped: A Hospitality Management/Culinary Arts Mentoring and Job Training Program at the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA. The program aims to help mitigate the barriers to employment for young males and females of color.
