Luella gained a seedy reputation as the town whore after her husband Jimmy Rae ran off with Camille, the town. After tiring of this profession, she sought decent employment at the cotton mill in town. Since her questionable lifestyle stymied her job hunt, she consulted her dear friend, Madam Chantel Thibodeaux, the local voodoo doctor, who in turn, casts two spells; one to better her finances, and the other to bring the love of her life. Never could she imagine, the spells would bring very rich and caucasian James Earl Thompson into her life. Her relationship with James upset almost everyone in the litte town of Crabtree, Georgia. They tried to hide their relationship as best possible, but when you are colored, and sleeping with a white man in the 1920s, during the heart of the segregated deep south, your taboo relationship may be discovered, in which you may find yourself hanging with a weeping willow's arm wrapped around your neck.
