show moreBy January 26th, another correspondence was received. The handwritten message declared, “Here it is. Turning in Wed. January 29, 10 a.m. Had my fun at police. Black Dahlia Avenger.” The letter provided a location. Law enforcement officers awaited at the designated time and place, yet the author failed to appear.
Following the incident, the alleged perpetrator sent a message to the Examiner using letters cut and pasted from various magazines. The note stated, "I have changed my mind. You did not treat me fairly. The Dahlia killing was justified."
However, all the items sent by the individual had been thoroughly cleansed with gasoline, rendering any fingerprints untraceable by investigators.
At a certain point, the LAPD dedicated 750 investigators to the case and conducted interviews with over 150 potential suspects connected to the Black Dahlia murder. During the initial investigation, officers received more than 60 confessions, but none of them were deemed credible. Since then, there have been over 500 confessions, yet none have resulted in any charges being filed.
