Johnny Dollar continues his investigation into the death of Dan Parker, despite mounting resistance from acting county attorney Tom Bates, who threatens to block Dollar's attempts to question the victim's adopted daughter, Luann Parker. Bates claims the young woman is too upset to be interrogated, but Dollar suspects there's more to her story than a simple case of mistaken identity. The investigation takes Dollar to Sammy Drake's Happy Hollow Roadhouse, a neon-lit dive on the highway north of town.
At the roadhouse, Dollar confronts Sammy Drake, who quickly reveals he had no motive to harm Parker since the county attorney was on his payroll for fifteen hundred dollars a month, providing protection for Drake's illicit operations. Drake paints a picture of Luann as a spoiled, naive young woman desperate to escape small-town life for the glamour of New York City, despite her father's objections. She frequently visited Drake's establishment seeking information about big city life, much to the disapproval of both her father and Tom Bates, who harbors romantic feelings for her.
