Johnny Dollar faces mounting hostility from Tom Bates, the acting county attorney who's replaced the murdered Dan Parker. Bates insists on being present when Dollar finally gets to interview Lou Ann Parker, the daughter who shot her father thinking he was a prowler. Dollar turns the tables on Bates, suggesting that the attorney himself had motive to kill Parker: he got the job, can now run mobster Sammy Drake out of town without interference, and stands to benefit from the insurance money if he marries Lou Ann. The confrontation sets the stage for a tense interview.
When Dollar finally meets Lou Ann, he finds her remarkably composed and mature beyond her years. She dismisses Bates from the interview despite his protests, demonstrating an independence that intrigues Dollar. Lou Ann speaks candidly about her relationship with her father, admitting their only disagreements centered on her desire to move to New York. She also reveals her complicated history with Sammy Drake, the one person in town who speaks against her, explaining how her playful deception turned into unwanted romantic attention.
