On the night of April 25, 1973, a ten-year-old boy named Greg Garrett ran screaming into his house in Enfield, Illinois. Something had attacked him in his backyard—a creature that stomped on his foot with clawed, three-toed appendages, shredding his tennis shoes. Thirty minutes later, his neighbor Henry McDaniel heard scratching at his front door. When he opened it, he found himself face-to-face with a nightmare: a four-and-a-half-foot-tall creature with three legs, a short body, two tiny arms protruding from its chest, and two glowing pink eyes as large as flashlights[citation:7][citation:8]. McDaniel fired four shots, hitting it at least once. The creature merely hissed "like a wildcat," then bounded fifty feet in just three leaps before vanishing into the darkness along the railroad tracks[citation:7].

In this episode, we investigate the Enfield Horror—a case that terrified a small town, drew armed monster hunters from across the state, and remains one of the strangest cryptid encounters ever reported. We examine the physical evidence: the six-toed footprints in the soft earth, the scratch marks on McDaniel's door, the claw marks on the siding of his home[citation:8]. We explore the conflicting theories: Was it an escaped kangaroo? McDaniel insisted it wasn't, having kept one as a pet during his military service in Australia[citation:1][citation:7]. Was it a wild ape? A genetic mutation? Something from another world? McDaniel himself believed it was extraterrestrial: "If they do find it, they will find more than one, and they won't be from this planet, I can tell you that"[citation:7]. We also examine the skeptics' perspective—sociologists studied the case as an example of "social contagion" and mass hysteria, and Greg Garrett later admitted his initial report was a hoax "to tease Mr. M and have fun with an out-of-town newsman"[citation:7][citation:17]. But McDaniel passed a lie detector test. Two weeks later, he saw the creature again. And a radio news director named Rick Rainbow captured a recording of its blood-curdling screech—a recording that has since been lost to time[citation:1][citation:4]. The Enfield Horror was never caught, never identified, and never explained. It simply vanished into the southern Illinois night, leaving behind only questions.
